Point-of-sale hardware for retail

Setting up a retail checkout
The number of checkouts depends on the size of the store and on customer traffic.
| Station | Hardware family | Quantity to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout | POS systems | 1 per checkout point |
| Receipts | Printers | 1 per checkout |
| Scanning at checkout | Barcode scanners | At least 1 per checkout |
| Receiving and inventory | Barcode scanners | 1 in the stockroom |
| Loyalty program | Loyalty and gift cards | Per batch, based on the program |
Choosing scanners and cards
1D scanners read the linear codes on packaged goods. 2D scanners also read QR codes and stacked codes, which appear on coupons and many loyalty cards. The SC310 reads both. If your client issues coupons or barcoded cards, propose 2D from the start.
For receiving and stock counts, the JCG980 wireless scanner goes with the employee down the aisles. In inventory mode, it stores the scanned codes and uploads them to the station afterwards.
Loyalty cards and gift cards are printed in the store’s colours. Each card has an encoded HiCo magnetic stripe and a barcode, so check which of the two the checkout can read. Points and balances are tracked in your client’s point-of-sale software.
