Keyboard wedge (HID) is the mode in which a reader presents itself as a keyboard: scanned characters are typed into the active field with no driver, but the application cannot tell where the input came from.
Why it matters to a reseller
HID mode needs no driver, which is why it has a reputation for working everywhere. In exchange, the cursor has to sit in the right field at the moment of the scan. With software that opens modal windows, that detail is the first cause of call-backs after an install.
