Unbox and check the contents before plugging anything in. Power the terminal alone, confirm display and touch, then add one peripheral at a time, testing after each. If everything is plugged in at once, there is no way to tell which part introduced a fault.
Procedure
Unbox and inventory
Compare the contents to the order form before throwing out a box. Record the serial number of every unit: without them, no return request can be tied back to an order later on.
Power the terminal on its own
Do not connect any peripherals yet. Check start-up, the display, touch in all four corners, and sound. A fault found at this stage can only come from the device.
Set up the system before the peripherals
Set the language, time zone, updates, administrator account and password. Doing this later usually means restarting with peripherals attached, which complicates the diagnosis if anything goes wrong.
Add one peripheral at a time
Connect the printer, then the cash drawer to the printer, then the reader and finally the customer display. Test after each addition: a global test that fails will not tell you which part is to blame.
Replay a complete transaction
Run a real sale from start to finish: scan an item, take payment, print the receipt, open the drawer. It is the only test that validates the whole chain, including the client’s software settings.
Document it and leave the sheet on site
Write down the models, serial numbers, network addresses, ports used and logical names. This sheet lets you troubleshoot over the phone six months later, without a site visit. Keep administrator passwords off it: give them to the manager separately, through a channel they control.
Check these before calling support
- Serial numbers are recorded and kept by the reseller.
- A complete transaction has been replayed in front of the client.
