Sizing a paging system: how many units, and where to put them

Have ready: A floor plan of the venue, an observation of the queue at peak time, and the manufacturer’s documentation for the system being considered.

Count the parties waiting at the same time at peak: a pager is handed out per party, so that is the number that matters. Add a reserve for units on charge and for losses. Mount the transmitter high, at the centre of the area to cover, away from metal masses and kitchen equipment.

Level: field setup

Procedure

  1. Count the parties waiting

Sizing depends on how many parties wait at the same time at the busiest moment of the week. Have the client count them over two or three peak services.

  2. Add the operating reserve

Part of the fleet is always on its charging base, another part is out of service or lost. A fleet sized exactly to the observed peak will fall short within the first month.

  3. Mount the transmitter high and central

The transmitter radiates from where it sits: at the centre of the area to cover it works in every direction. Against an outside wall it wastes half of that. Keep it clear of nearby metal and kitchen equipment.

  4. Map out the call points

The kitchen, the bar, the host stand and the pickup counter are call points to equip, like any place from which someone must be able to call. Their number sets the configuration to quote.

  5. Run the test before confirming the order

A site’s real range cannot be deduced from a floor plan. Walk out to the worst points with a unit in hand: this test lets you base the quote on a real measurement.

Check these before calling support

  • The count of waiting parties was done at peak.
  • The transmitter location was validated by an on-site test.
